Wizard of Oz...coming soon!
The Wizard of Oz...Presented by St. Clare's Primary Cavan. 14th & 16th of May.
We have some very talented artists that have designed our poster for advertising our production around Cavan town. We will be choosing the lucky designer to have her poster professionally produced! Keep an eye out in Cavan for the winning poster!!!

Our Final thoughts...
We do not have to get our children to learn; only to allow and encourage them in their learning. We do not have to dictate what they should learn; only to discern and respond to what it is that they are learning. Such responsiveness is at once the most educational.

This quote encompasses our views regarding how our mindset has changed thanks to the Creative Schools project. As teachers we like things done in an orderly fashion and everything and everyone to be in its rightful place. This control can stifle creativity and once we got over the fear of letting go of the reins and allowing the children to have a voice we realised that
“Education is an imprecise process, a dance, and a collaborative experience.” - Siva Vaidhyanathan.
Previous to the Creative Schools Project, when we were undertaking the production of a school muscial, we did so with a vision of what we wanted the finished product to look like! We never thought that the children may have their own vision of how the production would unfold!!! Subsequently their vision included PSY's 'Gangham style' and One Direction's song "One way or another"!!!
We were wondering how we could work these in... but the girls had that all sorted! 'Gangham style' would be a dance scene for the crows annoying the scarecrow...and 'One way or another' would be sung by the witch and her Flying Monkeys!
There was a stipulation that the words to the song would have to change from " I will drive past your house" to " I will fly past your house!"
When presented with such a confident arguement...we couldn't but agree!
We found that when the girls had an ownership of the project they were quick to immerse themselves wholly in the process. They showed a sense of pride when their opinions were valued and this lit the fire for further creativity. They will place more importance on the day when people stopped to listen to something important they had to say, or an idea that they had, than how polished a final production may end up.
We always strive in our classes to foster enthusiasm towards any aspect of learning…through the Wizard of Oz we have touched on so many areas of the curriculum in a fun engaging way.
As mentioned at the start of our blog we had highlighted the many curricular areas that a production of this magnitude would cover. In hindsight it would have been easier just to focus on one sub-project based on the Wizard of Oz but by us having our fingers in so many pies we feel that the children have had a more rounded and fulfilling creative, learning experience.
As you scroll through our Creative Schools Blog you will see the elements of Art, music, dance and ICT explained through interviews, photos etc. Another main element that we were fostering through the creative schools process was Drama.
With the introduction of the mindset of Creative Schools we were conscious to allow input from the girls for the scenes they were performing. As a result of the girls adding new elements and ideas to the production it naturally allowed more discussion on the elements of Drama. The girls have a clearer understanding of voice projection, positioning, timing to create an emotive experience for the audience, acting and reacting to others, facial expressions and using your body to further enhance dialogue. The girls were given free reign of the drama press to rummage and choose their costumes that would best portray their character. The girls have expressed how much their confidence on stage has improved which has meant the whole project will have a long lasting effect on them.
“You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.” - Clay P. Bedford
Hand in hand with all of these creative learning oportunities we were also aware of the literacy oportunities that the project nurtured. As mentioned previously we are in the maintenance phase of procedure writing in conjunction with the First Steps writing genres. The girls practiced their procedure writing when creating hats for the Ozians. This was a good exercise for the children to see how what they learn in class can transfer to other areas and be done in a fun and creative way. The amount of literacy and oral language elements that the Wizard of Oz touched on can’t be denied. Confidence and competence in using language, emotional and imaginative development through all aspects of the project were augmented. This is not to take away from the obvious opportunities that the girls had to improve their reading and writing skills.
We have enjoyed our blogging experience. The girls, their parents and other teachers have enjoyed being able to keep an eye on all the creativity as it was happening!!! Our blog was very much a working document throughout the process and it is very much a reflection of how all the parts of the projects were evolving simultaneously. You will see elements of the musical compostion, then the animations...then it jumps to the creation of our hats etc... Hopefully visitors to our blog will understand that creativity isn't structured and organised!!! We hope that anyone that does visit enjoys our blog and gets a sense of the creativity and enthuasiasm of the girls in St. Clare's!
On reflection as we are coming to the end of this project, where we initially endeavoured to awaken the imagination of the girls through a variety of mediums, we have learned that it doesn’t necessarily matter what medium you use as long as the children are engaged and are given opportunities to express themselves and for their voices to be heard.
“Teachers, you don't teach a subject, you teach a child.”
- Deepa Bhushan
We as teachers will carry this message with us.
"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."- Albert Einstein
We hope the girls will carry this message with them.

Lights!! Camera !! Action!!
This seed for this project was planted by one of the girls in Ms. Brady's Fifth Class. Patricija had created animations with her father at home and brought them in to share with her class. The girls were so excited by the animations that they wanted to create their own. Patricija's father came into school to demonstrate how to make the animations. Then it was all systems go!
The children watched the original movie and took notes throughout of significant scenes that were of interest to them.
Then in groups they chose their favourite scene and created a story board to show the sequences of characters and events in the scene.
They then made their characters and props they needed from modelling clay.
Now here’s the technical bit!! The girls took a series of photographs, carefully moving their characters through their scenes. These photos were exported by the girls to Windows Movie Maker where their photos came alive. They had to change the transitions and timings between the photos to create the animations. They also searched through youtube to pick the right music to accompany their piece.
Their delight at creating a professional movie that would rival Pixar caused great excitement. This project involved a lot of problem solving which is very much a buzz word at the moment and through collaborative group work, trial and error the girls created very unique pieces of work. . .
The girls themselves have discussed what worked and what didn't quite work with their projects.
They will be posting their comments under their animations to give you an insight into the process from the producers themselves!!
Already they have seen how to progress this project even further....Patricija has shown them an animation that involved placing sound effects in their creative pieces...the girls were extremely excited by this...so even though their teacher thought she was nearing the end of the project the girls want to continue....so the creativity is growing and growing in Room 18!!!
Again this project appealed to various learning styles as it encompassed art, designing and making and ICT.
We hope you enjoy watching all of the animations!!

The Twister!!
Poor Dorothy’s gone,
She’s running away,
But half way there the trees start to sway.
She sees the twister, it gives her a fright,
She runs back with all her might.
But when she gets back she’s all alone,
Why aren’t her Uncle and Aunt at home?
Suddenly the house begins to twist,
She’s surrounded by a mist,
She’s twirling, twirling all around,
My goodness! The house has left the ground.
This is an excerpt from our script that sets the scene for the following animation perfectly. Keep an eye out for all the details that the girls worked painstakingly on...the door swinging in the wind...the ruby slippers under the house when it landed in Oz. Well done girls!

Musical Composition
Music: Composing:
Adding percussion to a known piece of music to add tension, fear and foreboding to the twister scene. The trad group listened to some pieces of music that created different moods and feelings and they discussed what instruments would be best to create the desired effect.
They chose a variety of drums, wood blocks, cymbals and chimes to create the illusion of wind, thunder and rain. They picked a Kerry polka with a steady beat and discussed where their chosen percussion instruments would feature in the piece. They then experimented with how the tempo would change throughout the piece of music. The piece would begin slowly, then increase its tempo to a crescendo and then slow down again.
This piece will be performed live during the production of “The Wizard of Oz”. The girls enjoyed the experience of moving from sheet music to creating their own emotive composition. All frustrations from a busy school day were taken out on those poor instruments! We’re always talking about different learning styles and for these girls who have a passion for music, it was nice to put this into practice.
Our troop of dancers got together to create movement to music to further evoke the impending twister! They came up with all the movements themselves and it was our aim not to over chorograph for a change! Dance doesn't need to be synchronised to be effective...if the girls are feeling the mood of the piece and conveying it through their bodies...that is creativity from head to toe!

Wiz Kids Interview!!!
In this special Wiz Kids TV edition, our ever enthusiastic roving reporter, speaks to the some of the girls involved in the Creative schools project.
The teachers involved felt that it was important that the children were given the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings on the project as it comes close to the end.
The teachers felt that no matter how hard we tried we couldn’t capture in written words, on the blog, all that the children have gained from the various projects.
So… what better way to do this than interview a focus group of girls from the various projects.
We hope you enjoy this clip!

Some Thoughts from our Wiz Kids!!
As this project progressed we found that when we loosened the reins the children were more than capable to take over. They came up with many ideas that enhanced the projects and gave them a sense of ownership.
We wanted to give a flavour of some of the ‘sparks of creativity’ that the children came up with. As each child may have a different learning style from another it was important to remember that, “Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.” - George Evans.
For some of the children their creativity sparked in different ways and at different times. Often we found that one child’s inspiring thought fuelled the imagination of others.
“Everyone and everything around you is your teacher.” Ken Keyes, Jr.
Rather than highlighting any particular moment of creativity or any one child that impacted on the project we wanted the girls to express how their imagination moved the project in an exciting direction.
The ethos of the Creative Schools Project is that every child has a voice…and each voice is appreciated and valued equally. Take a wander down the yellow brick road and through the imaginations of all our very creative girls! Click on the "COMMENTS" button below to read their thoughts! Enjoy!

Emerald City Hats!
Art: Designing and making: Creating hats for the Emerald city…then re-creating the hats once the children had discovered they had certain flaws as seen in our Blog. It was a lesson well learnt as “Learning starts with failure; the first failure is the beginning of education.” John Hersey. From the offset from looking at the children’s plans and listening to their descriptions we were aware of these obvious flaws and had to bite our tongues but felt it was important for them to make the hats and then critique their work! Subsequently you can see take two of their endeavours in the below videos.

Create and Animate!
Working from their storyboards the girls are getting their characters and scenes ready for animation!
Our Animations...
The girls spent time creating their story boards for their animations in groups. The storyboards presented their own problems which required alot of dicussion and problem solving! The girls really needed to consider the sequence of their stories and make sure they were finely tuned so the animations would run correctly. In the wiz kids TV clip below you can hear some of the girls explaining their thought processes and their scenes.
Enjoy!!

Next stop Hollywood!!!!
We have watched the original Wizard of Oz in our creative groups.
We took notes during the film of key and interesting scenes.
We stopped the movie and discussed the possible use of using these scenes to create our short animations.
Our brainstorming sheet shows the scenes that appealled to us the most. In our groups we are busy getting our scenes ready for production!!!
Steven Spielberg...watch out!!!

Percussion,percussion ...and more percussion!!
Here we are picking our percussion instruments! Don't forget to check out Wiz Kids TV to hear how we are getting on!!

We are busy seeing what instruments are most effective for creating tension and suspense for the twister scene...Watch this space!!
If at first you don't succeed.....
Well...we had some very industrious girls who went and made their hat designs based on their plans. We picked 4 hats to be constucted then we put them to the test!! We got some of the girls from our Emerald city scene to practice wearing their hats while moving and singing!! We had some very interesting results!!!
We used the best possible friendly way to critique our hats and this is what we decided!!
This hat was a great representation of the Emerald city made with papier mache but unfortunately not stable enough to wear on stage!!!

This hat was colourful but yet too small for the audience to appreciate its detail!!!
This one was stucturally sound and we could dance about with it...but not colourful enough for our Emerald city!!!
We're getting there...big, bright and colourful but might need some embellishment.

Busy Day!
Today was a good example of organised chaos!! We had to look for and choose costumes that would be suitable for our characters. This really made us think about how to portray our characters on stage!
Many of the girls said how they felt much more comfortable creating and making drama when they looked the part! Keep an eye for some of our pictures!!

Wiz kids phrase of the week!
The scarecrow has a fantastic song where he is complaining about his lack of grey matter (a brain!)...
He sings " I could while away the hours, consulting with the flowers"
Can you tell me what this means and can you write a similar personal statement???

We're off to see the Wizard...
Welcome!
We hope that you will come on our magical journey with us! We are setting off from St.Clare's in Cavan. Our girls are leaving their comfy seats in Fifth and Sixth Class and are getting ready to travel to a new and magical land. On the journey to see the great Wizard of Oz they will encounter many exciting and wonderful things...we need to get prepared!!With many of the teachers and children in school we work hard every year to prepare and perform a school musical. This year our musical is 'The Wizard of Oz'. This year teachers and students are approaching our preparation very differently! The 'Creative Schools' project has made us look at the creative process involved rather than the final product!
We have almost 40 girls from fifth and sixth class participating in our school musical. Practice for the musical takes place after school but we have enlisted the help of some class teachers to help us with teasing out the girls' creativity in class through various projects linked to their curriculum objectives.
When examing the learning objectives that could be achieved from the project as a whole...we were amazed at how many there were... which lead to a decision of what areas we would prioritise.
The following are the 3 main projects we are focusing on:
Art:
Construction;
1:Designing and making hats for the fantastic people in the city of OZ
The girls are busy working on designs for their hats. These amazing creations will be modelled in the opening scene of the second act.
As a school, last term, we focused on procedure writing in conjunction with our First Steps Programme. To help maintain this we are getting the girls to write the procedures for how to make their hats. They will put on a fashion show for other classes and read their procedures to them. Here is a sneek peek at one of the hat designs and the detailed instructions on how to construct it!
2:Also in the Visual arts strand combined with ICT we have a very interesting project going on in one of our fifth classes!! One of our pupils has an interest and a talent for animation and she is working with her class to develop short animations based on scenes form the Wizard of Oz. But don't take my word for it...click on the link to she some of her work to date! (Scroll down the Blog to post dated 20th December for a peek!) http://room18fifthclass.blogspot.ie/
We can't wait to see what the girls create!!!
Music
Perfoming: Playing Instuments
Composing:Improvising and creating
3.Talking about and recording compositions
In St.Clares we have a Traditional Music group. These girls are working on a piece of music that they will record for the 'Twister' scene. They are combining a traditonal Polka with percussion instruments that they will choose to set the scene.
Phew! We are going to be busy munchkins!
As we said we are focusing on these 3 projects but...our creativity doesn't stop there!
The processes involved in making a script come to life will be encompassing many other subjects from the curriclum!
Drama to explore feelings, knowledge and ideas, leading to understanding
- Exploring and making drama
- Reflecting on drama
- Co-operating and communicating in making drama
- Responding to music through movement
Literacy:
Oral Language:
Discuss the meaning, effect and diversity of local words and expressions
As a school we have priortised vocabulary development as an area we would like to improve. As we are going through the script and songs we will be brainstorming alternative words/meanings for words the girls are stuggling with. This in turn will help them correctly convey the meaning of what they are saying! There will be a section on the blog where we will be challenging the girls to come up with alternative words in a fun way!
We will be posting pictures, interviews and samples of work. We are hoping to use the 'comment' facility under the posts as a forum for the girls to post ideas and thoughts about their projects!
We are hoping to publish a digital scrapbook of our adventures!
So click your heels three times whenever you would like to join us on our adventure!

A song to make us think...
We are hoping to include this song for Dorothy to sing to all her new found friends in OZ before she returns to Kansas.
What do you you think?
Can you relate to any parts of the song???
